Carlisle’s best kept garden competition

(Date of issue: Thursday, 28 August 2008)

The winners of Carlisle City Council’s Best Kept Residential Garden competition will be rewarded for their green-fingered efforts this Friday (29 August).

Prizes will be awarded to the top three gardens, as judged by the City Council’s award-winning Green Spaces team. Twenty entries were put forward, in total, for the competition and judging took place in mid-August.

As part of the Carlisle In Bloom campaign, Carlisle City Council teamed up Westwood Nurseries to award vouchers to the entrants who were judged to be the best in the Carlisle district. Points were awarded for the striking impact of the garden, the use of different plants and the overall colour scheme. Cllr Ray Bloxham, Portfolio holder for Environment and Infrastructure, said:

"I would like to pass on my congratulations to the winners of the best kept garden competition. A lot of local residents invest a lot of time and effort into making their gardens pleasant and appealing areas for the whole area to saviour."

Bruce Walker from Westwood Nurseries, who kindly supported the competition, will present the prizes. The presentations will take place tomorrow (Friday, 29 August), 1.30pm, at Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery. The winners are:

  • 1st - Mrs Stockdale, 2 Knowefield Avenue, Carlisle – who will be presented with £75 of Westwood Nurseries vouchers and the Carlisle Best Kept Residential Garden trophy;
