Carlisle Airport site

Planning application given go-ahead

(Date of issue: Friday, 19 December 2008)

Members of a Carlisle City Council’s Development Control Committee gave their go-ahead for development proposals for the Carlisle Airport site today.

Carlisle City Council’s Development Control Committee gave their backing for the £multi-million plans for a freight storage and distribution facility. The approval is subject to conditions, together with commitments to be secured under a Section 106 Agreement under the Town and Country Planning Act including:

  • Provision of public transport services to the site
  • Replacement for habitat lost to the development
  • Requirements for measures to protect homes from increased lorry noise
  • A specification and programme for implementation of runway upgrade works and provision of passenger terminal facilities.

The appropriate conditions coupled with the Section 106 Agreement are considered to make the application ‘policy compliant’ and therefore the application would not require to be referred to the Secretary of State as a ‘Departure’ from the Development Plan.
