Carlisle City Council has removed stones installed to help create a new layout in Talkin Tarn’s car park today (Tuesday, 20 January), following a recent review.
The stones were taken from a local quarry and were put in place to make the best use of the parking space available.
Managers reviewed the use of the stones and have taken a decision to remove the ones placed within the centre of the parking space. These will be set to one side of the car park prior to being relocated to the tarn’s edge, as part of revetment works to prevent erosion.
Cllr Ray Bloxham, Portfolio holder for Environment and Infrastructure, said:
"Although the basis for putting in the parking bay demarcation was well-intentioned, the stones, when in-situ, have too much of a visual impact and it was felt that they should be removed and used in another parts of the country park. We will look at other methods of establishing the parking spaces that will increase capacity and provide a safe environment for visitors."
Recent car park improvements were part of the City Council’s continued investment in the facilities at the Country Park and will continue to ensure that the facilities on offer meet the needs of visitors and residents.
Due to regular congestion within the car park, it was widened before Christmas, removing the narrow section within the area. This involved taking out some of the previously grassed areas a few small trees and cutting back the bank at the end of the car park. This work makes much better use of the space that is available.
Plans are also in place to remove the temporary recycling facilities at the entrance of the park. This will coincide with the opening of Brampton’s new Civic Amenity site scheduled for early March this year.
