New scheme starts this April

(Date of issue: Friday, 27 March 2009)

A new leaflet setting out the different ways residents can get rid of bulky household waste has been put together by Carlisle City Council.

Although some items will continue to be collected for free by the City Council, a new charge for larger objects such as carpets, garden furniture and electrical equipment, will start from this April onwards.

The £15 charge will allow for the collection of up to five items, per collection. A range of charges for the collection of fixtures and fittings will also be brought in. These range from £10 for the collection of kitchen units up to £25 for hot water tanks.

Three options are available to residents wanting to get their bulky household waste collected:

  • Impact Furniture Services – they collect clean, re-usable unwanted furniture and electrical goods. They then sell these on at low cost, helping residents and the environment. Telephone 01228 633655 or make visit to their depot based at 47 Nelson Street, Carlisle.
  • Household Waste Recycling Centres – you can recycle a range of bulky household waste items at Cumbria County Council’s Rome Street and Brampton (Townfoot Industrial Estate) centres.
  • City Council bulky household waste collections – telephone 01228 817200, email customerservices@carlisle.gov.uk or call into the Civic Centre’s Customer Contact Centre, for advice or to arrange a collection.

All City Council bulky household waste collections are limited to a maximum of five items per collection.

A full list of what can be collected free of charge (a maximum of four free collections per household, per year) and what collections are chargeable, are included in the new City Council bulky household waste collections leaflet. Copies are available from the City Council’s Customer Contact Centre and also online at: Carlisle CIty Council
