Rural Voice

The purpose of the newsletter is to provide information and contacts about projects and programmes happening in rural Carlisle and puts you in touch with people who can offer advice and support.

The newsletter is produced by Carlisle City Council but includes contributions from a range of other organisations active in rural Carlisle, in particular the Carlisle Parish Councils Association. It is hoped that through Rural Voice we can help to unravel and de-mystify the complex programmes happening at a local, regional and national level and highlight what it means for rural Carlisle. I hope you find the newsletter useful and informative.

If you have an article or events that you would like to submit for publication the Rural Support Officers will be pleased to hear from you.

To be added to the circulation list contact the Rural Support Team on 01228 817312 / 817355 or email zoes@carlisle.gov.uk or clairer@carlisle.gov.uk

September Rural Voice

  • Untapping the potential of Village shops.  Research carried out by Voluntary Action Cumbria (VAC) has found that people value shops and post offices as a meeting place as well as providing goods and services.
  • Owning the Assets’ Affordable Housing Conference.  This event held recently was aimed at exploring the potential for communities to provide permanently affordable housing through local trusts.
  • Play areas in the Parish? City Council help with safety inspections. Insurers are now looking for an accredited inspection programme, with a full technical check taking place at least once a year.
  • Allotments. All over the county, Parish Councils are being asked to provide plots for the first time and this includes some in Carlisle and District.
  • Carlisle Healthy Networks. The Carlisle Healthy Networks project will primarily focus on the reduction of health inequalities by encouraging and supporting the development of health and wellbeing initiatives in the community.
