Electrical Safety

Important notice for all electricians and other persons carrying out electrical work

Since 1 January 2005, building regulations have controlled all electrical work carried out in dwellings

There are two alternatives routes to achieving compliance with Part P open to persons carrying out such work:
  1. Use of the compentent persons sefl certification scheme (recommended Route)
This is a government approved scheme where electricians become registered with one of the several approved self certification organisations e.g. NICEIC, ELECSA, BRE, BSI & NAPIT. Once an electrician joins one of the schemes, he simply has to notify the organisation of all works carried out under the scheme. There is also a 'Defined Scope Scheme' for other trades who carry out a limited amount of electrical work in connection with their main work activity e.g. gas fitters, kitchen installers, bathroom installers etc. The approved bodies under the 'Defined Scope Scheme' are CORGI, ELECSA, NICEIC, NAPIT & OFTEC.
  2. The submisson of plans or a building notice to Carlisle city council
This involves the submission under Building Regulations of either full plans or a building notice to the Council in respect of each individual job carried out. In the case of a new dwelling or an extension or alterations to an existing dwelling, the electrical work will be included with the building work. However, where electrical work only is being carried out e.g. a rewire, a separate application (or building notice) will be required (please note that charges are payable). The Council will inspect the work and require a copy of the BS 7671 Electrical Installation Certificate from the installer.
