The Councils Environmental Health Officers carry out regular checks on all food businesses to ensure that high standards are maintained and the public is protected.

Visits are carried out with or without prior notice and are programmed according to the degree of potential risk each business presents. This ensures that higher risk businesses are visited more often than those in lower risk categories.

During an inspection, Officers will look to ensure that potential food safety risks have been identified by the business, and that adequate controls are in place to prevent any problems. They will also look at the training of managers and other staff to ensure that it is suitable, and they will check that the condition of the premises and equipment is satisfactory.

Where things are not satisfactory, every attempt will be made to resolve the situation informally, but if poor conditions persist, or where there is a risk to public health it may be necessary to take more formal action. This might be the service of legal notice, a prosecution, or in extreme cases we may close down the business.

All action will be in accordance with the Council's Food Safety Enforcement Policy.

More advice on Food Safety and Enforcement can be found on the Food Standards Agency web-site www.food.gov.uk.
