Pollution Control - Water

Private Water Supplies are defined as supplies of water which are not provided by a statutorily appointed water authority. They may be water supplied either by spring, well, borehole, stream, river, lake or pond.

There are a number of domestic and commercial private water supplies within the Carlisle City Council area. The Environmental Quality Section is responsible for monitoring water quality for a range of bacteriological and chemical contaminants.

Each of the Private Water Supplies tested must comply with the parameters as laid down in the Private Water Supplies Regulation 1991. These regulations indicate both the water quality standards required and the frequency of testing. (The frequency of testing varies depending upon the number of individuals using the supply and the volume of water used.) Further details of sampling requirements can be found in the Private Water Supply Regulations 1991. Further information can also be found using the link to the DWI – "Information Leaflet – Private Water Supplies".

The costs of sampling and analysis are passed on to the person responsible for the supply.
