Carlisle City Council has altered the way household rubbish is collected.
Refuse and recycling are collected on alternate weeks.
In addition to the Greenbox and Garden Waste services, the majority of households have been provided with a wheeled bin for refuse.
Despite a big increase in recycling over the past few years, prior to the changes there was still too much rubbish going to landfill.
The new scheme has reduced the amount of household waste sent to landfill by 28% and the amount of household waste recycled exceeds 50% for the first time.
